I ran upon a very cool NY Times best-seller recently — Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six Word Memoirs from Writers Famous & Obscure published by the folks at Smith Magazine. The legend behind the book is that Ernest Hemingway was once challenged to write a story in only six words. He came back with:
“For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”
Wow — like a fine wine – just has so many layers! So the folks at Smith Mag have this ongoing on-line a well. It is amazingly entertaining. As they say, ’starting in 2006, SMITH Magazine re-ignited the recountre by asking our readers for their own six-word memoirs. They sent in short life stories in droves, from the bittersweet (“Cursed with cancer, blessed with friends”) and poignant (“I still make coffee for two”) to the inspirational (“Business school? Bah! Pop music? Hurrah”) and hilarious (“I like big butts, can’t lie”). ‘ Fun stuff.
It also prompted me to figure out my own six word memoir:
‘Pop the cork. Life is short.’
So if you get a chance, pick up the book, grab a glass of wine (your ‘reading glasses’) and enjoy. And take a shot at writing your own six word memoir — use the comments section to submit — I’m looking forward to your story (hey — that’s another six words!).
