Humanitas Hump Day Haiku…the Freak!

I love baseball.  I played a little in college at UCLA…a long, long time ago.  And somewhere along the way, I made the psychotic decision that I had a better future in wine.  Hmmm…maybe I should have thought about that a bit more.

Now I’m simply a fan.  And other than some feisty over-the-line wiffle ball games with my son, like Peter Seller’s role as Chance in Being There, I like to watch.  Living in Napa, my team is the Giants.  The SF ballpark is about an hour away & it is one of the great new stadiums in the country.  Unfortunately, the Giants last year were lousy.  They weren’t all that easy to watch.

With one glorious exception.

And today’s hump day haiku celebrates that standout.  Tim Lincecum, the Freak, won the National League Cy Young award today with 18-5 record on a team that touted a miserable 72-90.  But when he pitched, they were 22-12.  He had 2.62 ERA and 265 strikeouts.  And he’s 5′11″ (maybe) and 160 pounds!

Blows them ALL away

I don’t always write about wine — mostly I do — but not always.  I’m not even sure if Tim ‘the Franchise’ is even old enough to drink.  He looks 15.  I do, however, like to pair my wine choices with ballgames.  And next season, I am looking forward to picking some winners to enjoy when Tim pitches.

Meanwhile, Tim, if you read this, feel free to give me a call.  I have a wiffle ball with your name on it and good bottle of wine we could pop.  Let’s raise a glass to Cy…and to Tim…and hope the Giants are a lot better next year.
