In my opinion, maybe the best thing about Thanksgiving is the leftovers. There is something sublime about a really great turkey sandwich on some hearty bread with just about everything I can find in the fridge to drop on top. Avocados are a must. So is red onion. But I’ll put cranberries, cheese, sprouts, walnuts, carrots — whatever I can find.
Then I settle down in front of the tube to watch football. Yes, I’m a typical American. And if all goes well, I’ll finish my sandwich, wash it down with a glass of my Humanitas Chardonnay (or two!), and take a much needed nap as my team crushes its opponent.
Well — almost everything was perfect. Except UCLA got crushed…not the reverse. But we did have a
perfectly ridiculous conversation about the origins of the word ‘Bruin’ (apparently referenced in some old English novel — and that’s about it). This is exactly what I like about Thanksgiving. Food, wine, family, fun, football…and naps brought on by an excess of turkey.
And a final note about leftovers. There is big distinction between ‘leftovers’ and ‘must go’s’ in our house. Leftovers are something you eat the day after you had it as a meal. ‘Must go’s’ are those leftovers that have now sat in your fridge for at least three days — they either must be eaten…or they must go away. I’m not sure what pairs best with must go’s — but no doubt wine is mandatory.
