Overheard in Wine Country #1

One of the joys…and curses of living in Wine Country (in my case Napa) is that no matter where you go, someone is talking about wine or the wine business.  And often, I pick up little bits of conversation — not the whole thing — making for great fun figuring out the context.  These non-sequiturs are a source to start a dialogue — maybe try to figure out the context.  Or maybe fabricate a whole story from them.

The other day I was at a restaurant in Santa Rosa, Willi’s to be exact, and overheard a man and a woman talking over a glass of wine.  They obviously were both in the wine biz and were talking about this year’s harvest.  She asked him something about an issue they were having at the winery — I couldn’t hear what — but his answer busted me up.  He said, “What the hell…can’t do much about that…fermentation happens.” 

All I could think of is what a great bumper sticker that would be.  Of course, only wine freaks would understand it, but that’s okay.
